One DALY can be thought of as one lost year of "healthy" life. The sum of DALYs across a population help to quantify the burden of disease, and to evaluate the gap between current health status and an ideal health situation. Data for other age ranges are also available in the table.

Water is considered as unsafe if it contains germs, worms, or toxic chemicals. It can cause some diseases such as diarrhoea or cholera. A lack of handwashing facilities can accentuate the spreading od those diseases. Additionally, a lack of safe water for drinking or cooking can lead to dehydration and sickness.
