GaFa - Groundwater Access Facility
The Horn of Africa Groundwater Access Facility (HoA-GaFa) is a collaborative initiative designed to coordinate UN-wide efforts, with the support of IGAD Member States, to sustainably map, assess, and provide groundwater to transboundary regions in the Horn of Africa. This facility aims to deliver a constant, clean water supply to urban, peri-urban, and rural communities, serving over 1 million people and 2 million livestock. HoA-GaFa facilitates public-private partnerships and assesses groundwater-related risks by integrating diverse datasets through a comprehensive Management Information System (MIS). Spearheaded by UNESCO, the MIS consolidates and analyzes aquifer data from various sources, allowing stakeholders to make evidence-based decisions, thus enhancing sustainable water provision and regional groundwater management.
