The project “AquaCoLab: collaborative laboratories and citizen science for monitoring the quality of freshwater systems” is a Citizen Science project developed by the University of Burgos in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science and Innovation.

Aim

The overall objective of the project is:

To implement a citizen participation methodology for monitoring the quality of freshwater systems through collaborative laboratories “CoLabs” (general society, associations, town councils, schools, universities, etc.) using different citizen science platforms and instruments, which will enable:

1. Obtain a collaborative map of the environmental quality of freshwater systems in the province of Burgos.

2. Increase scientific culture by helping to improve knowledge, environmental assessment, and responsible innovation in freshwater systems.

3. Promote and improve the active participation of society in the study and care of these ecosystems and knowledge about compliance with the European Water Framework Directive.

Participation & Audience

Target group: Everyone is welcome to participate in the project. However, activities are focused on groups of people (associations, neighborhood associations, NGOs) and schools and colleges.

Number of participants: 3-30 per group

Duration of involvement: Two-time event

Achievements:
To date, the project has managed to bring together more than 20 groups with over 700 people monitoring the rivers in the province of Burgos.
